Most of the general public are well aware of what oil and gas are, but very few have an understanding as to what unconventional oil and gas are. They basically understand that in order to tap into these resources it requires tapping into the pools of the natural gas or oil that is found in the underground . These pools are sought out and found to be located within some rock . These substances can be drilled for and are what is commonly known as conventional natural gas or oil.

What about unconventional oil and natural gas? This is referred to as shale gas, and for those that are familiar with it, the concensus is that it will be the fuel of the future. It is still considered very much to be experimental, but what is known about it to date is encouraging.

What has to be realized here is how the term unconventional relates to these resources. Basically, it is not in reference to the specific substances, but in the way that it is harvested or extracted.

Another difference that is significant is the type of rock in which the oil and natural gas resources are extracted from. In the case of unconventional oil, it is found in rock that is considered to be low permeability which includes rock such as sandstone or shale for example. For unconventional natural gas, it is sought out in similar circumstances as the oil with is low permeability rock and sandstone. As well as the gas that it found in coalbed methane.

As soon as the word coal is mentioned many tend to become on defensive because of the adverse effects that coal mining can have on the environment. This is something that those who are into composite energy are well aware of and are not going to downplay the challenges that come with this.
